Gorillas in the Mist

No Journey to the “Land of a Thousand Hills” is complete without a visit to Volcanoes National Park in Musanse. Home to the six Virunga Volcanoes, the lushly forested slopes of the mountain form a dramatic natural setting in which to experience the world famous mountain gorillas.

Our group was joined by World Relief President, Sammy Mah and his wife Lorelei for a three hour trek through the forest, led by experienced trackers. The climb to the gorilla’s natural habitat offered extraordinary views in all directions. Our trek was a thrilling experience as navigated the overhanging vines, moss covered trees and other vegetation that thrives in the tropical climate—all in the drenching rain!

Although we struggled through the mud to navigate steeps slopes and slippery trails, we were able to watch the gentle giant gorillas, including silverbacks, baby and juvenile gorillas. We didn’t even mind the pouring rain as we watched, followed and photographed the gorillas going about their daily life – feeding, playing, resting and raising their young. Just imagine the impact of being within 10 feet of a giant silverback gorilla! It was an experience of a lifetime!

Our Rwanda Journey Team are heading home now but have been transformed by the people and the beauty of Rwanda. Nancy's Journey will continue in Kenya and Burundi.
